Spinal Cord Injury is a condition that can be temporary as in Spinal Shock or Permanent in the relationship of functioning at the level of injury. Cervical Injuries 1-4 are the most acute with a priority action focused on Airway Support.
During the acute phase of the injury to the spinal cord the patient can have spinal shock that goes through 4 phases that can last up to 12 months. During this time it is important to be assessing for Neurogenic Shock which is a hemodynamic phenomenon that can happen within 30 minutes of the initial injury.
